The Privacy Dashboard - Monitoring App Activity

The Privacy Dashboard - Monitoring App Activity

Discovering the UP Phone’s capabilities is a worthwhile activity to get more from your device and to more thoroughly secure your data and communications.

The UP Phone, like other Android based operating systems, includes a built-in Privacy Dashboard in the Settings area to help you monitor the access which various applications have to the phone's features and systems.

Note: This is different from and not to be confused with the Privacy Center which is a control panel unique to the UP Phone.

This dashboard is yet another way to secure your device or to investigate and prevent malware or spyware from infecting your device, providing transparency and peace of mind. If you ever suspect your phone is compromised, use this quick go-to tool for checking activity including from unauthorized or over-permissioned apps.

We do everything we can to take the anxiety out of smartphone ownership and to put you in complete control. As a reminder, the Unplugged’s built-in firewall, Antivirus, third-party tracker blocking, purposeful omission of an Ad ID, security tools and even lockdown ability offer robust protection against malicious software. However, our engineers can’t account for every scenario. Each UP Phone user develops their own risk profile as they choose which apps they download and what security practices they choose to employ.

Giving you another tool, the Privacy Dashboard displays a log of which phone features have been accessed, and by which apps and services in the last 24 hours, allowing you to keep an eye on unusual activity.

Here’s how to access the Privacy Dashboard and log:

Open up Settings on your UP Phone by swiping down from the upper edge of the UP Phone screen.

The first swipe opens an abbreviated menu.

The second downward swipe opens a more complete menu and the Settings button is the gear icon on the lower right.

Go to “Security & privacy” in the menu. You may see that UP Antivirus scanning ability is integrated with this area.

Tap “Privacy”

Then tap “Privacy dashboard”

The dashboard will then display which features have been accessed and by which apps, and a timeline for usage over the last 24 hours.  Here's how the Privacy Dashboard displays, when there is no activity.

This is very different from Google products. Although a Google-based smartphone, such as a Google Pixel with built in Google Mobile Services (GMS), also features the Privacy Dashboard feature, you will quickly see that Google apps specifically are accessing various Location, Calendar, Call logs, Contacts and many other areas of the device all of the time.

Here is an example of Google accessing Location over the course of a day on a Google Pixel. The maps access is understandable, but the larger Google Android OS is also accessing location as apps access location, whereas the LibertOS on the UP Phone does not access Location

Now back to the UP Phone Privacy dashboard. Here is an example of what is displayed on the UP Phone when the Instagram app uses the camera.

Again, the Privacy Dashboard is just another tool to keep you safe and secure. It is not a substitute for good overall security practices, such as using strong passwords, 2-factor authentication, end-to-end encrypted apps, browsing with a VPN and keeping your operating system and Antivirus up-to-date.
